Over 19,000 job placements for unemployed young people have been created so far under the UK Government’s £2 billion kickstart scheme.

The landmark scheme, which gives those between the ages of 16 and 24 the opportunity to access work placements and funding across the UK, began earlier this month.

It’s available to young people who are claiming universal credit and at risk of long term unemployment.

The Treasury revealed the scheme received 4,359 applications from employers across Great Britain.

Each job placement lasts six months and is fully funded by the Government, helping build experience and confidence in the workplace.

The kickstart scheme is one part of a support package for young people, with the Government investing £1.6 billion for young people which includes an increasing number of apprenticeships, traineeships and employment support schemes.

Thérèse Coffey, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, said:

“The pandemic has hit young people hard, but we are doing everything in our power to give them hope and the chance to find their place in the world of work.

“Employers from all corners of the country have signed up, creating thousands of new and interesting jobs and helping us to level up as we build back better.”
